Camping Under the Stars

We joined Tosh and Michiko this past weekend for a little camping trip at Point Reyes National Seashore, just north of San Francisco.  The sky was pitch black and the stars were as bright as ever.

From the main entrance at the Bear Valley Visitor Center, we hiked in about 3 miles up and over the mountain to our campsite at Sky Camp, a hike-in campground.  Our campsite had a great view of the coast and was very private.

Main highlight of the trip: After hiking 3.5 hours to our campsite, Tosh realizes he doesn’t have his tent poles…so he hikes 3 miles back to the car…no poles…drives home 1hr…picks up tent poles…drives back 1hr…hikes back 3 miles in darkness…and makes it back in time for our pasta dinner at the campsite!

New moon = No moon = Bright stars!

The next morning, we had a pancake breakfast and packed up camp.  The return hike was much easier with most of the food weight gone and almost all downhill!

Camping with the raccoons

Two weeks ago, I met up with my old friend, Lee, for weekend camping at Montana De Oro State Park.  Our campground didn’t have a shower but it did have pit toilets and running water.  It was 4 hours south of SF by car, but 7.5 hours by Greyhound!  Somehow, I took the Greyhound bus from SF to the San Luis Obispo station and Lee picked me up from there to the camp site.  Timing was perfect and we got there around 3pm, Friday.

We got a pretty good camp site and explored a bit before Courtney and Scott arrived.

We had the whole day Saturday and tried to fish with no luck.  Somehow, we went for the crabs instead.  But nothing could beat the steak dinner with homemade chilli and grilled corn…

Montana De Oro was a great spot to get away from the city and the noise.  However, if you can stand the raccoons sniffing at your tent all night and not showering for a few days, then this your perfect place!
